We understand completely that joining an MMA gym can be extremely intimidating from the get-go. After all, walking into a space as a beginner when everyone else seems as though they are experts is hard enough as it is. Then, in addition, you have to figure out what sort of gear you need. Whether you are brand new to martial arts or you have decided to expand your knowledge on other disciplines, we can at least assist you with the type of gear you need here on our blog. However, for the rest, you’re going to need to come into our gym. Continue reading below to learn more.
Ask Your Instructors Which Gear Is Best
If for some reason you aren’t coming to our NYC MMA gym, you may need to reach out to your actual instructor first and foremost to ensure you are investing in the right gear. While we certainly know what sort of gear our members need, your personal needs will depend on the types of classes that are being offered at your gym. With that said, most gyms offer boxing gloves and MMA gloves for people who are wanting to give the sport a try without having to spend a ton of money on equipment. This will certainly be helpful if you have not decided whether you want to sign up for a gym or not. However, if you already have chosen your gym and paid for your membership, you will likely need to gear we discuss in the following paragraphs.
Remember, Safety First
You’re going to have to think about what sort of gear you are going to need in order for you to perform better in the long run. However, before you get to that point, you’re going to need to invest in equipment that will keep you safe and healthy. If you are planning on buying some protective gear and sparring gear, know that it is best if you invest in equipment that is custom fit for you. Additionally, we would highly recommend that you buy a mouthguard as it is one of the most vital ways you can protect both your teeth and your brain.
Invest in the Basics
It is also recommended that you buy some new clothing for training and fitness in general. While there isn’t clothing that has been designed for martial arts specifically, you can find plenty of options to fit your MMA attire needs. Whatever it is that you purchase, just be sure you can move freely in it and you should be good to go.
Test It Out
Once you have all of the basics, now comes the time when you get to pick your gloves. Sure, there are gloves at your gym but one of the best parts of learning MMA is having your own pair that you don’t have to share with anyone. Attend a few classes first in order to make sure you know what sort of gloves you want, talk to your trainer some more, and ask classmates for suggestions. In the end, you are the one who gets to choose the right gloves for you and your MMA practice.
Remember You are Making an Investment…In Yourself
We understand that it can be a bit overwhelming when you first start MMA. There are a lot of expenses and you may begin to worry that it isn’t worth it. However, we would urge you to stick it out. While it might seem like you are just investing in a lot of equipment, you are actually investing in yourself.
