A New Yorker put his martial arts skills to use and thwarted an attempted baby-snatching in a Big Apple park last week, pinning the perp down for 15 minutes until authorities arrived, he said Monday.
Brian Kemsley, a 33-year-old Muay Thai coach, stepped in when he saw a man trying to grab a baby inside a stroller from a woman who was also holding another child in her arms last Monday in Madison Square Park.
“I was trying to get him away from the mother, and let her get away to safety … But toward the end of it, I was also trying to keep the guy safe from the mob,” he told The Post.

Jonny Lee Mill, Actor Turned Muay Thai Fighter Tops Friday Night Fights
Jonny Lee Miller: from silver screen to boxing ring
Jonny Lee Miller is the English actor living in the US. His resume includes numerous films and TV series, including Hackers and Trainspotting, just to name a couple. Since 2012 he has been a lead character in Elementary on CBS, portraying a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.
Last year Miller made headlines in Muay Thai circuits. The 46-year-old actor debuted inside the ring in May, after completing a five-week training camp, wrote Lilian Dikmans in a feature story. The latter is the Australian model who simultaneously competes in Muay Thai.

There are many misconceptions about Muay Thai and the types of people who practice it. It can easily be framed as a violent blood sport attracting a certain type of character.
However, for me and many others, the “Art of Eight Limbs” is a discipline that can be respectfully practiced to build physical fitness and mental strength. British born actor, Jonny Lee Miller, would seem to agree.

Muay Thai Is the Most Badass Workout You Haven’t Tried Yet: Brandon Levi
Kylie Gilbert | August 4, 2017
What I learned from 2 weeks of Muay Thai Training in Thailand
“Muay Thai is second only to Brazilian jiujitsu for women’s self-defense,” Levi says. And it’s surprisingly approachable. “The techniques are simple, effective, and easy to learn. Within six months of beginning to study Muay Thai, the average person can reasonably expect to be able to defend themselves reasonably well in most situations,” Levi says.
Literally the most badass thing I’ve ever done.

Fighters of New York: Mark Davis and Adam Karami
Pari Aryafar | August 3, 2017
Muay Thai fighters Adam Karami and Mark Davis of Evolution Muay Thai will be competing this evening at Friday Night Fight’s long-awaited Rumble on the River. The two men have been looking forward to their bouts for several weeks now and are eager to show New York City what they’re capable of.
“I’ve never seen another fighter like me,” Davis says firmly. “There are many accomplished gay female fighters that are out and fighting, but I don’t know of any gay male fighters. I always thought I couldn’t be both: a fighter and a man that was out. Now I realized that I can be that person. I never could see myself in someone else, like, “Hey, they’re like me.” Well, if I couldn’t find it, maybe I can be that for someone else.”
After training for the last couple of years, Karami feels as though he has changed dramatically as a fighter and a person. “Before, I only pushed myself if someone else lit a fire under my ass. But being at Evolution, it’s become so much different. I have to push myself every day if I want to keep up, if I want to do well instead of just try to survive. This particular camp has taught me my potential and has shown me what I’m really capable of.”

Victoria’s Secret Model Gracie Carvalho Stays Fit with a Seriously Badass Workout
Alexa Tucker | July 17, 2017
“Muay Thai is a combination of strength and conditioning…and it uses almost every muscle in your body,” says Muay Thai coach Brandon Levi, founder of Evolution Muay Thai in New York City. The movements are explosive, he says, which gets your heart rate high for a cardio challenge. You’re working the muscles of your upper and lower body when you’re throwing kicks and holding or punching the pads, and it’s a major abs challenge as well, because your core stabilizes and powers you through every movement.
While there are major physical benefits of Muay Thai, they’re not the only reasons to try it as your workout, Levi says. What sets Muay Thai apart from going to the gym and splitting your time between the treadmill and the weight room, for example, is that you’re learning a skill that you can build upon.
“When you practice and practice and notice you’re getting better at it, that’s really a good feeling. That self-improvement aspect is probably one of the most important parts of what we do,” he says. Plus, if you’re at a level where you’re sparring, getting your butt kicked once in a while also helps improve mental fortitude. (Not to mention, it feels pretty powerful to be able to throw a punch or a kick.)

Fighters of New York: Bartosz Botwina
Pari Aryafar | July 14, 2017
“I’m just really happy to be here,” Botwina says. “I have a good life. I don’t want very many things, just to travel and to be comfortable. All I care about is training Muay Thai and getting better at it, to keep fighting, and to keep seeing my little dreams come true.”
The sound of timers going off is what greets guests as they walk into Evolution Muay Thai. Nestled on the second floor of 27th St and Broadway, the gym is lively and rambunctious. Head instructor and owner Brandon Levi walks amongst his students, correcting their form or cracking jokes on their behalf.
Off to the side, on a different corner of the blue mats, stands Coach Bartosz Botwina. Botwina is wrapping his hands quietly, paying no mind to the noise that is occurring around him. Two of his training partners and students, Adam Karami and Mark Davis, strap on their shin guards. While Botwina is preparing for his Glory Kickboxing debut at Madison Square Garden, the two young men are gearing up for Rumble on The River, which is taking place a few weeks after the Glory bout. It doesn’t matter that they are amatuer fighters or that Botwina is their coach–everyone in the gym serves and betters each other in some way.

Raquel “Rocky” Harris at The Forefront of The Evolution of Women’s Fighting
Pari Aryafar | April 14, 2017
“My team loves me,” she says simply. “It’s critical to have people around that make you feel good and safe. There’s no one else I want in my corner other than my coach, his wife, and my boyfriend. Being a part of the team means being a part of the family. My confidence in myself is higher than it has ever been because I am around the best people I could be around. I think it’s very underestimated how much your camp helps you to get to where you’re at. I didn’t do this by myself, my accomplishments are a testament really to the investment that my coaches and teammates have put into me. I’m never afraid to go into the ring because I don’t walk alone–I can easily turn my head and see who is there for me. I have that when so many fighters unfortunately don’t. It’s not just about hard work and technical training for us, it’s about a bond that very few are lucky to experience.”

Eldris Barbosa, a 21-year-old Dominican American hailing from the Bronx, sits in a room backstage. He stands at 6’1” and weighs 170 pounds. Tonight, Eldris’ trademark boyish grin is replaced by a steely grimace. He’s wearing a pair of black shorts, shin guards, 12-ounce boxing gloves and a mongkhon, a traditional muay thai headgear that resembles a white rope tied around his forehead. Eldris focuses on steadying his breath and ignoring his cotton-mouth. Brandon, his coach, is saying something, but Eldris barely hears him. All he can think about is stepping into the ring against Brett Taratko, his heavily tattooed opponent.
There’s a buzz in the air of Queens Theatre. It’s 7 PM on a Saturday night, and rap is blaring through the speakers on either side of the stage. The crowd has just settled into their plush red theater seats. Their eyes gradually begin to fixate on the red boxing ring in the center of the stage. A few men sneak glances at the bored, scantily-clad ring girl propped along the ropes of the ring. At 7:10, a bearded black man in a black suit appears. He deftly ducks under the ropes and swaggers his way to the center of the boxing ring. “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen!” the announcer roars into his mic. “We are live in Queens, New York, at the world famous Queens Theatre. We present to you, Warriors Cup XXV!” The crowd – mostly family, friends, and gym members of the fighters – claps impatiently.

A Day In the Life: Angela ‘Overkill’ Hill
Angela Hill | Jun 12, 2015
It’s almost noon so it’s time to grab a bite to eat. My Muay Thai coach, Brandon Levi, and I go to Mooncake, one of our favorite lunch spots. The food is yummy but also healthy so I’m not all sluggish during evening training. On the way to lunch we’ll game plan, talk about life in general or just share gross pictures we found on the Internet. Anyone who knows Brandon knows that a picture text from him will not be suitable for work. I would share one with you, but I’m not sure your gag reflex is strong enough.

Muay Thai Guy Podcast – Episode #55 Brandon Levi has been one of my favorite and one of the best trainers I’ve worked with throughout my career. Training with Brandon and the guys (and girls) at Evolution Muay Thai in NYC was awesome & I’ve definitely become a better fighter & person because of it.
In this episode of the Muay Thai Guy podcast, Brandon shares his thoughts on running a gym, training his fighters & much more including:
- Why he moved from Australia to New York.
- The reasons and process behind starting Evolution Muay Thai in NY.
- What type of unforeseen challenges and obstacles he initially faced when starting up his own gym.
- How he’s able to balance training his fighters while still giving equal attention to the fitness-only members.
- How he went from training and fighting Muay Thai to eventually finding his calling as a trainer.
- The types of ways he’s able to push, motivate and get the most out of his fighters during training.
- What he believes makes a quality trainer, cornerman and fighter. Why he thinks it’s important to have fun and joke around, but also make sure that his fighters/gym members take him seriously.
- The importance of building a “community” around his gym and having all the members support each other during fights.
And much more!

What are the best Muay Thai Gyms in New York City

“Check out Evolution Muay Thai in Flatiron – 27th and Broadway. It’s a new, growing gym started by Kru Brandon Levi, who hails from Australia and has fought in Thailand. I’ve been with Kru Brandon before he started this gym and he’s the kind of guy who emphasizes great technique and strong fundamentals. Evolution is energetic, friendly, and very team-oriented. If you’re a beginner, you’ll feel very comfortable here.
The other gyms that I know of in the area but haven’t checked out myself are: 1) The Wat (run by Phil Nurse), Five Points Academy, Church Street Boxing, Sitan Gym (in BK), and Fighthouse.”
